The Flying Z Ranch Story
The Flying Z Ranch offers whitetail trophy hunts as well as management buck, cull buck and doe hunts. The 540-acre high fenced ranch is centrally located in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. The ranch is approximately 40 miles north of Fredericksburg, TX. We are about halfway between Llano and Mason, Texas near Castell, which is right on the Llano River. Actually, we are about 1 1/2 miles from the Castell General Store in Castell, TX.
The ranch was acquired by The Zernell family in 2011 and continues to be primarily in it’s natural state with native grasses, wildflowers, mesquite trees, numerous live and post oaks, gently rolling hills with granite outcrops, 6 ponds and a wet weather creek providing an ideal environment for whitetail production. When we took ownership of the ranch, there was not a lot of diversity in buck quality and deer size. A large percentage of the mature whitetail bucks were 8-points.
Beginning in 2014, the Zernells decided to add some breeder doe to the population to introduce new genetics to the herd and consequently improve the deer quality. We continued to execute the supplemental feeding program including feeding protein and corn year-round. Our efforts have resulted in quality trophy whitetail bucks whose characteristics have improved in number of points, antler mass and body size! Protein and corn feeders are owner maintained and located throughout the ranch with 6 easily accessible blinds available for your hunting enjoyment.
If you choose to hunt predators, we will pay you a “bounty” for any bobcat and coyote you take; no limit! Cold storage is available on site with a lighted area for cleaning and skinning of deer. A 100 yard shooting range is available for sighting in rifles.

In addition, we have covered parking for a trailer with electric and water hook up. Wood is available but no charcoal is supplied. If none of these options appeal, we may also suggest local lodging that may be available close by.
